NEW - EXPERIENCE THE ITALIAN LIFESTYLE, BOTH URBAN AND COUNTRYSIDE

Destination:Piacenza and Milano, Italy

Date: September 19 to 28, 2014

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Discover two contrasting Italian lifestyles, urban, fast-paced Milano and relaxing countryside Piacenza.
  • Enjoy the Gothic, Neoclassical architectural style of the breathtaking Duomo di Milano, which took nearly six centuries to complete.
  • Slow things down with the laid-back lifestyle of Piacenza.
  • Take a stroll through the vineyards of Ziano and sample local wines.
  • Be in the first group to welcome Milano and re-welcome Piacenza into the Friendship Force.

Description: Join us on the “rediscovery of Italy”, as we meet former Friendship Force members in Piacenza who are eager to reconnect and introduce us to “Bella Italia”, as they offer a trip of discovery to Piacenza and Milano.

We will begin the program in Milano where our hosts will introduce us to many fascinating places in the big city, such as The Duomo Cathedral, an  amazing jewel of Italy with its 3400 statues standing on marble spires. A walk through the magnificent Vittorio Emanuele Gallery will lead to the Scala theater and Palazzo Marino. This mediaeval-inspired city consists of lots of small streets and low-rise apartment buildings set around beautiful courtyards. These are just a few of the sites that will expose you the simplicity, enthusiasm and hospitality that best defines Italian-style Friendship.

After 4 days of excitement in the big city, we transfer to Piacenza where will spend the rest of our Italian stay in a more set-back and relaxed part of the country. The city has many historic buildings and palaces that preserve the original Italian architectural styles. One particular highlight of our stay will be a visit to Ziano, a grape harvest, walk in the vineyards and a wine sampling of Italy’s finest.

We will return home with lots of memories of good food, good friends, and good times spent with our old friends from Piacenza and new friends in Milano

WINEMAKING IN GEORGIA-FROM ANCIENT TIMES TO MODERN DAYS

  • Tour the beautiful Caucus countryside.
  • Embrace Georgian life with an optional 4-day homestay with a Friendship Force family

Description: Visit Georgia - called “one of the most beautiful countries on earth” by Lonely Planet.  Georgia is one of the oldest wine producing regions of Europe. Grapes have been cultivated in the fertile valleys of the Caucasus for at least 7000 years. The traditions of its viticulture are entwined with the country's national identity. Georgia is believed by many to be the source of the world's first cultivated grapevines. Wine is a symbol of Georgian hospitality, friendship, tolerance and perhaps a key to the mystery of Georgian longevity. The rich land, burning sun and hard work have developed about 500 varieties of vines in Georgia.

Get acquainted with Georgian lifestyle and wine-making, enjoy wine tasting, visit cultural, and religious sites, watch folk dancing, and hear traditional polyphonic singing. Experience both modern winemaking and natural “qvevri” methods.  Qvevri were first mentioned in pre-Christian Greek and Roman historical texts, and are still used today. Visit craftsmen at work building qvevri.

We will visit UNESCO World Heritage sites, Sighnaghi and Kakheti wine regions, Gori, where Stalin was born and Uplistsikhe, an ancient cave city.  Along the way, we will see some of the spectacularly beautiful Georgian landscape.

This is a 7-day Friendship Force tour program, with hotel accommodations. After the tour program,, we will return to Tbilisi for an optional four-night homestay with Friendship Force members to further your understanding and enjoyment of the rich history and culture of Georgia.
